Joseph L. Pina, a native of Oxnard, died Jan. 23, 2009, surrounded by family at home. He was 90. Mr. Pina was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Oxnard. He owned and operated Pina Brothers Nursery in Oxnard, taking a break from the business only to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning home as a decorated veteran, he went to work for the ciy of Oxnard as parks superintendent, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1978. Mr. Pina married his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Garibay Pina, in 1941. In their retirement, the couple traveled to Mexico every year, spending several months in Mazatlan. He loved fishing, traveling to the High Sierras, tending his gardens, and barbecuing for family and friends. Mr. Pina is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Oxnard; daughters Maxine Pina Perket of Twentynine Palms and Angie Pina Varela of Oxnard; four grandchildre, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A celebration of Mr. Pina's life was held Jan. 28 in Oxnard, with interment following at Santa Clara Cemetery in Oxnard.
