Josefa Gutierrez was born March 10, 1928 in Reynosa, Tamalipas, Mexico and was adopted and raised by Pedro and Concepcion (Pena) Gutierrez. She married Pedro Gutierrez April 12, 1948 in Mexico and they moved to Pharr, Texas. They settled in Wasco in 1964. Josefa served her family as a homemaker and was a busy mother raising 12 children of her own and becoming the mother to 2 of her younger sisters and 1 brother. Josefa made the children's clothes, including their underwear, many of them out of flour sacks, she was an excellent seamstress. Having such a large family, Josefa learned how to make a great meal out of the barest of food. Her family's favorite was her tortillas, rice and beans, but especially the tortillas. Josefa was self sacrificing and put everyone before herself. She was a very unselfish person who would share what she had with those in need. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God which later became the Westside Family Fellowship. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Pedro; sons, Pedro, Jr., Jose and wife Dora, Ray and wife Roseanna, all of Wasco; daughters, Juanita Demery of Wasco, Carmen Martinez and husband Joe of Bakersfield, Ninfa Martinez and husband Santos of Shafter, Gloria Martinez and husband Danny, Minerva Gutierrez, Maria Gutierrez, Guadalupe Orona and husband Anthony, Virginia Gutierrez and Martha Gutierrez and husband Jorge, all of Wasco; the sisters she raised, Elva Gutierrez Sanchez and Angela Gutierrez; her other brothers and sisters, Abel, Benjamin, Teresa, Juanita, Camila, Rafaela: 38 grandchildren; and 35 great grandchildren; and many other loving family members. She was preceded in death by the brother she raised, Ramiro Gutierrez and brother, Tomas and sister, Julia. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 10, at 9am at Westside Family Fellowship for Josefa Gutierrez, age 79, of Wasco who went to be with the Lord October 5, in Wasco. Pastor John Ross will officiate and interment will follow at Wasco Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 9 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Wasco.
