IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jon Ray
Bushnell
October 7, 1934 – January 18, 2018
Jon Ray Bushnell was born in Hastings, Nebraska on October 7, 1934. He was the second son of Bruce and Bernice and was the last to survive out of his immediate family: parents, older brother, and younger sister. Times were tough during Jon's growing up years because America was just coming out of the Depression. Jon would ride his bike the six miles to Redlands, California in order to do yardwork for other people. For extra income, Jon drove the school bus for the Redlands School. This job began while he was a student at Redlands High School, and continued for two more years after his graduation. At that time, he was drafted into the army. Jon served two years in the army, first in California and then in Texas. In 1955, Jon bought a service station and worked there until 1963, when he sold it and became self-employed as a welder. Jon also took an additional job, working the swing shift at Lockheed, from 1966 to when Lockheed closed in 1973. During this time, Jon married Julia Bloemhof on March 13, 1959. Four children were born to them: Jon, Cheryl, Michael, and Kenneth. A special treat for his children was to go and visit their dad at the weld-shop on Saturdays. Going on camping trips together was also a highlight for the whole family. In 1976 Jon and his family moved north to Buttonwillow, California. There he became a partner with his brothers-in-law in the harvesting business. He ran B&B Harvesting for many years, but changed occupations when the stress and responsibility became too much. Jon then went into the equipment hauling business, owning and operating his own truck. During his retirement, Jon enjoyed gardening, watching sports on the television, and spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever they came to visit. His last years were confined more to home, as his health declined. After a battle with pneumonia, he died on January 18, 2018 at the age of 83 years old in Bakersfield, California. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 24, 2018 at Peter's Funeral Home, 844 E. Lerdo Hwy., Shafter, CA 93263. The family invites you to join them at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 235 James Street in Shafter, for a time of lunch following the service. Jon will be buried at Bakersfield National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
