Johnnie Garcia Lopez has closed his eyes forever, on January 13, 2011; he's opened them in the presence of the Lord whom he has trusted in his entire life. He was born on the 8th day of February, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas, to Augustina (Villa) and Gregorio Lopez. He was raised with 10 siblings in San Antonio, Texas and came to California via Santa Paula, came to Bakersfield attended East Bakersfield High School. He fell in love with Aurora (Aguilar), they married in San Bernardino in 1945 and soon after enlisted into the U.S. Army. He was an electrician with Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years, working the graveyard shift and subcontracting during the day; worked hard to provide for his family. After retiring from the railroad, Johnnie and his tackle box were constantly at the best fishing locations, waiting to catch the big one!! He enjoyed watching all types of sports and considered himself a Padres fan and looked forward to attending the annual 9th Air force Veterans Crew Reunions. Johnnie filled the remaining of his retirement time with volunteering at Our Lady of Guadalupe's Food Bank and a loyal volunteer at the ESPEECO Credit Union the last 20 years of his life, until he became ill and hospitalized at Memorial Hospital, January 6, 2011. Johnnie G. Lopez is preceded in death by his parents Augustina and Gregorio Lopez; brothers Vincent (1991) and Joe (2004) Lopez; first great grandchild Benjamin Lopez. His loving wife of 65 years, Aurora survives him along with their children Johnnie Lopez and his wife Sharon, Rosie Martinez and Mike Diaz, Jerome Martinez; sisters Felicia Chavez, Lucy Messimer, Lillian Fennell, Anita Darter, Carmen Salas, Tina Snidman and Georgia Grijalva; grandchildren Marcus, Trisha, Monica and Lana; great grandchildren Tyler, Sebastian, Nathan, Lea, Jaidyn; many long time friends and acquaintances as well as extended family members. Mass of the Resurrection, for Johnnie Garcia Lopez, age 88, of Bakersfield will be officiated by Father Chummar Chriyath at Our Lady of Guadalupe Friday, January 21, 2011 – 10:30 am, with interment immediately following at Union Cemetery. Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary will have visitation Thursday, January 20th from 5 to 8pm with the Holy Rosary recited at 7pm.
