John Gray Ohanneson was born Nov. 19, 1921 in Madera, CA to Phil and Phyllis Ohanneson. He attended Stanford University and served in WWII. Married for 70 years to the love of his life, Jean, they settled in Shafter, CA where he built a sustainable farming business at which he worked well into his nineties. John spent his life surrounded by family including his children, daughter Janie and husband Dan John, sons Joe, and Jeff and wife Cheryl; his grandchildren, Tamara and husband Marco Alicea, Kelly and partner Carmen Lopez, Ty, and Ali and husband Robert Garner; his five great grandchildren; his sister Mary (Bebe) and husband Dave Anderson and brother David; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was a respected member of his community who was recognized for his knowledge and generosity throughout his life. His endless energy and upbeat spirit were always what made him so special to all who knew and loved him. His love of the land, mountains, travel, backpacking, Monday night poker, and weekly games brought his family and friends together over the years, creating fond memories and laughter for all. John passed peacefully on Sept. 12, 2014 with his loving family by his side. He will always be remembered for his optimism, laughter, love of nature and thrill for life. "The mountains are calling and I must go." - John Muir Memorial services to be held on Sept. 20 at 11:30 am, at the Congregational Bible Church, 430 East Tulare Ave., Shafter, CA. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Sierra Club or a local charity.
