"One Hell of a Hunk of a Man" John joined his wife in Heaven on March 18, 2011 surrounded by family at his home in Shafter, CA. He was born in 1928 in Florida and settled in Shafter in 1970. He was one of eight children born to Crawford "Doc" and Nell Mullen. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Alma Jewell Spain, in Springfield, Oregon. He was a loving father of five, grandfather of 15, and "Big Papa" to 10 great grandchildren. He loved gardening in his yard and cooking, but above all he loved his family. He enjoyed his daily conversations with his brother Carroll and telling stories about his days as a lumberjack. John never met a stranger and was always making people laugh. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Alma, his parents, Crawford and Nell, his brothers: Bill, Charles, Warren "Moon" and Bob, his sisters: Alvina and Mildred, and his beloved grandson Warren. The family would like to thank his Caregivers: Alicia Bircumshaw, Laura Ruelas, and Linda Haught for not only providing care but also love. We would also like to thank Dr. Denis Maddox, Dr. Nic Hansa, PA Barry Massirio, Guardian Home Care, Optimal Home Health, Hoffman Hospice, and Kern County Fire Department Station #32 for their outstanding care and compassion. Viewing will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 11:00 am at the Shafter Cemetery. In life we loved you dearly; in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories; your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side.
