Herrera
January 24, 1930 – October 17, 2010
Joe M. Herrera was born January 24, 1930 in rural Shafter to Eotemio and Maria Herrera. He grew up and attended Shafter schools and has been a life-long resident of Shafter. Joe married Lupe Carrasco August 15, 1954 and soon after he entered the US Army. After serving his country he was honorably discharged May 6, 1955 to rejoin his sweetheart. Joe was a truck driver for over 50 years hauling all kinds of freight. He worked for Al Neely, Rudy Paloma and Lloyd Harner. In his younger years, Joe enjoyed bowling at the S-curve between Shafter and Wasco which is now the Wasco/Shafter Elks Lodge. Family vacations at Pismo Beach are one of the precious memories the family has of Joe. Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Herrera, who passed away in 2004; a brother, Nash; and 3 sisters, Alicia, Fannie and Sofia. Survivors include Joe's wife of 56 years, Lupe of Shafter; sisters, Sally Flores of Shafter and Becky Mendoza of San Jacinto; and many loving nephews and nieces. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 10am at Shafter Memorial Park for Joe Maria Herrera, age 80, of Shafter who passed away October 17, 2010 in Bakersfield. A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 19 from2pm – 8pm at Peters Funeral Home.
