Jewell March was born October 2, 1926 to Lila (Johnson) and Will Burkett in Oklahoma, one of six children. She moved to California with her family during the depression and became part of the dust bowl era families who traveled California looking for work. Jewell married Peck Ellis in 1943 and he died in 1954. After his death Jewell brought their family back to Shafter. Jewell married Kenneth Marchman in 1960 and they worked hard to make a better life for their family. Jewell worked in many of the area sheds including Mettler Bros. and Belridge Farms. Jewell was an avid sports fan, enjoying all sports including bull riding. She loved to watch children's sports. The Dodgers and Cubs were her favorite teams. She also enjoyed working in the garden caring for her roses and camellias and spent quiet times working on cross word puzzles. Jewell is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth Marchman of Shafter; sons, Homer Ellis and wife Missy of Mandeville, Louisiana and Kenneth Marchman and wife Scarlett of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Brenda Hansen and husband Keith of Princeton, California; sister, Vivian Potts of Merced; 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 15, at 9am at Shafter Memorial Park for Jewell Margaret Marchman, age 82, of Shafter who passed away at home on October 11, 2008. Pastor Jim Williams of the First Southern Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow.
