Jennie G. Melendez passed away quietly mid-day, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 with her daughter by her side. Jennie was born in Strohms, Texas on April 20, 1920 to Lorenza (Lara) and Benito Gamino. She resided in Kern County for 86 years and graduated from Bakersfield High School with the class of 1939. Started working at JJ Newberrys until she married her love, Victor L. Melendez. She held evening part-time jobs with downtown five and dime stores while working at Potomac Elementary School (Betsy Owens) where she retired from after 18 years of service. During summer breaks she attended Bakersfield Jr. College. She was involved with Logia 51 holding secretarial and treasurer positions and worked at their food stand during the Kern County Fair. Her last employer was Vest Drug Store until her second retirement at age of 72. She loved music and dancing; God blessed her with an artistic talent that just came natural to her, she designed the float that won "Grand Marshal Sweepstake for 16th of September Parade in Bakersfield. Jennie G. Melendez was preceded in death by her husband Victor L. Melendez (1985) and her son Victor Michael Melendez (2004), two sisters Mary Diaz and Ramona Gallegos. Her surviving family includes brother Luis Gamino, cousin Margarita Dominguez; son Lawrence H. Melendez, daughter E. Marlene Soto; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and extended family members. A 10:00 am Chapel Service will be held for Jennie G. Melendez, age 90, of Bakersfield Monday, March 28, 2011 at Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary with Bishop Tony Gutierrez of Living Stones Tabernacle officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8pm Sunday, March 27, 2011, at Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary. The family wishes to acknowledge those caring friends and caretakers for all the love and help that was given to Jennie and her family.
