Obituary

Jane Ann Long passed away at her residence in Wasco, CA on March 5, 2008. Services will be conducted at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1643 Palm Avenue, in Wasco, CA on Wednesday March 12, 2008 at 1pm. Jane Ann Long was born on February 18, 1921, in Okeene, Oklahoma. She was one of sixteen children of Louis and Callie Lee Westfahl. She played basketball in high school. After graduation from high school, she met and fell in love with Herman Long, also of Okeene, Oklahoma, and the two were married on October 4, 1941. The newlyweds lived in Southard, Oklahoma for a short time while Herman worked at a local gypsum mine. Jane Ann and Herman then moved to Wasco, California on October 12th of 1942. Jane Ann helped raise animals on their farm and sold eggs and other items while Herman farmed in the local area. While living in Wasco, Jane Ann and Herman started their family and eventually raised their four children, Karen Ann, Robert Earl, Mary Jane, and Shirley Marie. Jane Ann and Herman remained devoted to each other in marriage for the next 53 years and commemorated their 50th wedding anniversary with a large celebration in Wasco in October 1991 surrounded by family and friends. Jane Ann was a devoted mother who supported her four children in their numerous activities, which principally consisted of 4-H and Future Farmers of America. She was presented with the Wasco FFA Mother of the Year Award in 1963. Jane Ann also enjoyed canning various fruits and vegetables with her children and going on numerous deer hunting camping trips with her family. Jane Ann's Christian faith as a Lutheran was deeply important to her and was at the root of her family's life. She was instrumental in helping establish Trinity Lutheran Church in Wasco, CA, along with her husband. She participated in the church Ladies Guild and numerous other church organizations and remained an active member of the congregation throughout her life. In her later years, Jane Ann enjoyed traveling with Herman. They visited one of their favorite destinations, Pismo Beach, often. They also took two exciting cruises to Hawaii and Alaska and traveled to Klamath Falls, Oregon, for salmon fishing in their 5th wheel trailer. Jane Ann especially loved working in her garden at home and always remained surrounded by her lovely flowers. Her roses were exceptionally beautiful and seemed always in bloom to greet everyone warmly whenever they entered her home. Jane Ann also enjoyed sewing and arts & crafts and created many beautiful latch hook rugs that adorned several rooms of her home. Jane Ann was also a wonderfully loving grandmother to four grandsons. She attended all of her older grandson's concerts, performances, and school functions. She also enjoyed looking at pictures of and watching videos of her three younger grandsons and visiting with them in person and on the telephone. Jane Ann's family and friends treasure the days enjoyed with her and are comforted knowing that she is now with the Lord. Jane Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Herman Long, her son, Robert Earl, her sisters, Erma and Alice Ruth, and her brothers, Roger, James, Lester, and Raymond.
