Obituary

Jan Calvin Stuebbe was born on July 26, 1951, in Henderson, Nebraska, to Reverend Calvin and Marie Stuebbe. After a 19-month battle with cancer, he passed away at his home with his family by his side, peacefully entering into eternal joy and glory on November 30, 2013. Jan spent his early years in Nebraska and South Dakota before his family moved to Shafter when he was a freshman in high school. He was an outstanding quarterback, basketball player, and track athlete at Shafter High School, from which he graduated in 1969. Jan held many records at the school, including a pole-vaulting record that stands today. Jan played football and pole vaulted at Bakersfield College before transferring to Colorado State University, where he was one of the nation's leading passers in 1973. While at Bakersfield College, Jan met the love of his life, Debbie Dunlap. They were married in Denver, Colorado, on April 20, 1973. Jan and Debbie had three sons--Jacob, Andrew, and Tim. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Jan was an excellent role model for his sons, as well as for the many young people he encountered throughout his life. From his early years in athletics and throughout his entire life, Jan was a leader, motivator, and mentor, whether as a quarterback, teacher, coach, or school administrator. After graduating from Colorado State University in 1974, Jan accepted a position as teacher and head football coach at McFarland High School. He taught and was head football coach at Shafter and Centennial High Schools before becoming athletic director at Bakersfield College in 1998. He was recently honored by being named one of the 100 Stars for the 100-Year Celebration of Bakersfield College--individuals who had made significant contributions to the success of BC. Jan was inducted into the Shafter High School, Bakersfield College Alumni, and Bakersfield College Track Halls of Fame. Jan retired in 2011. He enjoyed traveling extensively with Debbie and playing golf. During retirement, he wrote and published "How to Be a Lousy Leader," a practical, to-the-point book filled with useful and insightful advice for leaders and aspiring leaders. Although Jan was a leader of others, what made him the man he was more than anything else was that he was a follower of his Creator God and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Nothing was more important to Jan than his faith. In the days preceding his death, he expressed his happiness and his readiness to meet his Maker. His strong faith and thankfulness for God's grace gave his family comfort and courage at his passing. Jan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie; his sons, Jacob (Nicole), Andrew (Wendy), and Tim; grandchildren, Israel, Mia, and Cael; brother, David Stuebbe; sisters Judy (Gary) Dunn, Carol (Warren) Hall, Jean (Gordon) Larson, and Evelyn (Robb) Wegis; sisters-in-law Stephanie (Randy) Chin, Mary (Steve) Sutton, Angie (Doug) Kileen; brothers-in-law Steve (Cindy) Laird, Greg Dunlap, Brian (Shelley) Dunlap, and Russell Dunlap, Jr.; loving aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Words cannot convey how much Jan will be missed by his family and by his many friends. His Fourth of July celebration will not be matched. The family would like to express deep gratitude to Dr. Ravi Patel, the CBCC staff, Dr. William Baker, and Optimal Hospice Care for their treatment and care of Jan. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 10am at Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Spradlin officiating. A reception will follow at the church, and a graveside committal will be held at 2:30pm. A visitation will be held at Peters Funeral Home, Wednesday, December 4 from 2pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Jan Stuebbe Student-Athlete Memorial Scholarship, @ BC Foundation, 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA, 93305; phone number 395-4800.
