IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jack
Colvard
October 2, 1931 – October 7, 2009
Jack Woodrow Colvard October 2, 1931- October 7, 2009 Jack Woodrow Colvard was born on October 2, 1931 and passed away peaceful at home with his family at his side on October 7, 2009. Jack was the second child born to Maude Edith Reed and Olen Jack Colvard He was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Jack moved with his family to Shafter, California where he met and married his sweetheart Anna Sue Henderson. They were married on June 14, 1952 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Anna Sue preceded him in death on October 28, 1992. Jack then married his wife Linda Schaefer on December 31, 1994. Jack and Anna Sue had five children, Jack Woodrow Jr., Mark Olen, Katrina Ann, Melody Michelle and Jeffery Lynn Colvard; they also raised Anna's sister Karen Ruth Henderson. Jack and Anna were married for forty years and made their home in Shafter. Jack worked very hard to support his family and make a better life for them. He worked in the fields and put himself through school at Kern County Community College to become a Mechanic. He then went to work for Cass Garlatz Pontiac dealership as a mechanic. He excelled at his job and his boss saw such promise in him, he let Jack become a car salesman. Jack worked hard and saved his money, he then purchased the Flying A gas station on the corner of Lerdo Highway and Elm Street in Shafter. This man had big dreams, this was only his beginning. After several years more of saving and hard work, He started the store know as, "Colvard's Home Furnishings". His career flourished and he not only provided his family with a good living, but strove to be the best businessmen he could be. He won several awards for his salesmanship, including the Whirlpool Salesman of the year! This was a remarkable task since he came from probably the smallest town in the United States to ever win this award. He won several trips around the world among other things. Jack bought and sold other businesses, did a little farming, owned a few apartments and real estate. He was a man with a drive to do the best he could for his family, which included his brother Tommy. He and Tommy were in business together, but most of all, Tommy was his baby brother. Jack also was very involved in his community and served on many boards and was a Shafter City Councilman. He was also awarded the Businessman of the year in the city of Shafter in 1977, and this was a new category and he was the first person to receive this honor. He believed you give back to the community that gave to you and your children. Jack was a Duncan yoyo champion and even won several Golf Tournaments including The PGA Amateur Pro in 1965. He could hit a mean baseball and play a sharp game of pool! He could sing a country song that would make your heart jump! But most of all he was known for his morals and values, Jack was an honest and loving man who loved the Lord! Jack was small in stature, had a huge heart! Jack loved his family more than anything! He had love for his children and grandchildren that had no end. Jack didn't stop with just the love of his own children. Jack had several family members live with him to help them out, this included his brother Tom and Anna's, sister Karen. You see Jack's family was large, if a niece or nephew needed him he was there, if a grandchild or child needed him he was there, he loved his family. He had many friends and everyone was always welcome at Jack's house. His smile and the tilt of his head made you feel comfortable even if he had never met him before! Jack married Linda and they shared the almost 15 years together. Jack and Linda traveled together and enjoyed one another's company. They shared a large extended family, which is not easy to do. Jack passed away with his Linda by his side. Jack was preceded in death by his son, Mark Olen Colvard, his wife Anna Sue, his mother Maude, his father Olen, his sister Betty Jo Edwards. He is survived by his wife Linda of Shafter, His son Jack (Woody) and wife Yvonne of Shafter, daughter Tina and husband Troy of Shafter, daughter Melody of Bakersfield, his son Jeff of Clovis, his step daughter Cindy and husband Larry of Shafter, and step daughter Dora and husband Don of Bakersfield. His brother Tommy and wife Bonnie of Texas and sister-in-law Karen and husband Howard of Canada. He is survived by twenty grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and eleven step-great grandchildren. And many nieces nephews, cousins, family and friends. Viewing will be at Peter's Funeral Home in Shafter on Friday the 9th of October from_2:00p.m.-8:00. Services will be held at the Shafter Cemetery on Saturday the tenth of October at 11:00 am. I will always love you from the land up above. We'll touch again soon. P.S. God sends His Love!
