Obituary

Rosary and Mass will be held March 24th at 10am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church for Irma Cecelia Fogarty. Irma was born in Plum City, Wisconsin and received her registered nurse's degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Superior, Wisconsin in 1938. She worked at Madison General Hospital, then left for sunny California to work at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles. After seeing an ad for RNs to staff airliners, she flew, for her first time, to United Air Lines School in Chicago to become one of a pioneering group of stewardesses. While at United, she met her future husband, Jim, who was a United agent in San Francisco. They married quietly, since stewardesses were required to be single, at Mission Carmel in 1941. She and Jim and their children lived in Alameda CA, Bend, OR, Sharon, PA and Redondo Beach, CA, and have lived in Bakersfield since 1959. Irma returned to her nursing career, off and on, at Mercy and San Joaquin Hospitals and worked as an aid to handicapped children at Wingland School. She was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and an Alter Guild member for many years. She especially loved baseball and faithfully attended Bakersfield Blaze games until a few years ago. She and Jim moved to Glenwood Gardens in 2004. Irma was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Jim, her parents; Frank and Rose Budewitz and four brothers and sisters. Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Jerry Beckwith, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Dave Jones, son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Sherri Fogarty, and daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rob Horjus. Her grandchildren are Jennifer Beckwith, Noel Jones, Sara Beckwith and husband CJ Grimes, Kelly Sanseverino and husband Mark, Laura Forester, Kyle Fogarty, Kaitlyn Fogarty, and great granddaughter, Lila Rose Sanseverino and great grandson, Charlie Sanseverino. The family would like to thank Glenwood Gardens, and her special friends there, Mary and Virginia for their kindness to mom; also, Don and Shirley Pruett, wonderful neighbors and long time friends. Memorials may be sent to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Altar Guild or St. Phillip's Assisted Living Ministry.
