Obituary

Oscar was born in September 12, 1930 in Choteau, Oklahoma to Edna (Attwell) and Hugh Newman and the family of 8 moved to California when Oscar was a toddler. Oscar attended Wasco elementary schools and graduated from Wasco High School with the Class of 1948. While in high school, Oscar was very active in football, basketball, track and baseball. Oscar served in the US Navy during the Korean War Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1956 after earning three medals during his service. Oscar married his high school sweetheart Rita Marie Holtermann in 1951 and together they had 7 children. Oscar loved fast pitch and played for many years in Wasco and Bakersfield. He was a team member of the Termites and also Oildale Merchants. Later on he picked up golf and played for many years until his health wouldn't permit him. Bowling was another sport Oscar enjoyed. Oscar is survived by his children, Jeff and wife Sharyn, Pat and wife Terry, Stan and wife Susan, Valerie Vibe and husband Erik, Teresa Scott and husband Bobby, all of Bakersfield; Vicki, Kenny and wife Tina of Wasco; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Newman and wife Judy; and 2 sisters, Marilyn Butterfield and husband Ken and Grace Muchmore. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 10am at Wasco Memorial Park for Hugh Oscar Newman, age 79, who passed away September 24, 2009 in Bakersfield, California. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 28 from 2-8 pm.
