Hortensia was one of eight children born to Hilario and Ignacia Astorga. She passed away peacefully on July 10, 2010 with her family by her side following a long illness. Hortensia was born and raised in Cabazan, Sinaloa Mexico and later moved to Ensenada, Baja California. During a trip to Shafter, California she met the love of her life, Theodore Rodriguez. They were married on May 10, 1952 in Ensenada and then returned to Shafter, California to begin their married life. They had five children, Gilbert, Lupe, Margaret, Edward, and Theodore Jr. During her marriage, Hortensia was not only a devoted wife and mother but also worked for Jackson and Perkins Rose Nursery for over 30 years. She was a devoted member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church and was active in "Los Guadalupano's" Church group. Following the untimely death of her husband Theodore in 1977, Hortensia dedicated her life to raising her children and later in life caring after her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was affectionately known as "Nana" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and each held a special place in her heart. Some of the most cherished memories her family has is her faith in God, her generosity and caring nature, her strong work ethic, along with her great cooking! Hortensia enjoyed spending time with her family, working in her flower garden, traveling, and was a devoted Dodger fan. Hortensia is preceded in death by her husband Theodore, brothers Heraclio Astorga, Hilario Astorga Jr, and sisters Isabel Leon and Aquilina Osuna. She is survived by her sisters Victoria Chan, Maria Esther and husband Jose Luis Duenas along with her five children, Gilbert and wife Olga, Lupe and husband Ray, Edward and wife Sylvia, Margaret Ramirez, and Theodore Jr. and wife Lupe, 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren along with a large extended family and many friends. Her family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers, help and support during this difficult time. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Bakersfield Heart Hospital, Fresenius Medical Care, Dr. Larry Yokoyama and Dr. Caroline Wong, who took such excellent care of her. Our mother and grandmother will be deeply missed but she will remain in our hearts forever. On July 15, 2010, a viewing will be held at Peter's Funeral home in Shafter, Ca from 2pm-5pm; 6pm Rosary will follow at St. Theresa's Catholic Church Shafter, Ca. A Catholic Mass will be held on July 16, 2010 at 10am at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Burial at Shafter Cemetery; reception immediately following at St. Theresa's Catholic Church Hall.
