Obituary

Helen Mary Ortega was born October 3, 1934 in Bakersfield, California to Mary (Gamino) and John Diaz. A large part of Helen's life revolved around the Eagles once she joined the Tulare Auxiliary in April 1972. Her late husband, Andy, was active in Bakersfield Aerie 93. So, when the Bakersfield Eagles formed its Auxiliary in January, 1993, Helen promptly became a charter member. Helen served as inside guard and Auxiliary Grandmother, she was always there with a helping hand when needed. She was known at Friday night dinners as the "Coffee and Tea Lady" and was affectionately called "Momma Helen" by her many friends and Eagle Family. Helen loved to travel and never missed an Eagle State or National Convention. She enjoyed Eagle bus trips and always joined her friends on the Eagle Cruises. She was very special to many and more like family to most. She will be fondly remembered and missed. The Bakersfield Aerie 93 will not be the same without her greeting smile Friday nights. Helen is preceded in death by her husband Andrew (July 2002), parents Mary Diaz (1997), John Diaz (1957). She is survived by her brother Robert Diaz and wife Rose; many loving nieces and nephews, numerous friends and Eagle family. Mass of the Resurrection will be said for Helen Mary Ortega, age 74, who passed away June 12, 2009 in Seattle Washington at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Monday, June 22, 2009 – 10 am, interment will immediately follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park (River Blvd.). Visitation will be held at Hopson-Anspach Family Mortuary Chapel on Sunday, June 21, from 2-8pm with the rosary recited at 6pm.
