Gwen was born in Stuteman County, North Dakota on June 16, 1923 to Daniel J. and Olive (Mariner) Voth. Along with the family, Gwen moved to Shafter when she was 12 years old and resided there for 75 years until moving to Bakersfield in 2005. Gwen worked as an office administrator for North Kern Hospital in Wasco for many years. She was the matriarch of both her immediate and large extended family and loved to share stories of her youth. She was devoted to her faith and was actively involved in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She also enjoyed traveling. In her younger years she enjoyed cooking and baking as her cheese pockets and cinnamon rolls were know far and wide. Her family will always remember her creative passion and enthusiasm for quilting. And through the years she gave many of her treasured quilts away to family and friends. Gwen was 91 years old when she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband John Arnold, sister Beverly Fenderson, children Dr. Gary (Tamhra) Gottfried, Janie Gottfried, Lori Gottfried-Matthews; stepchildren Jack Arnold, Mavis Hackney (Gary) and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Gwen is preceded in death by her first husband Clifford Gottfried, who she was married to from 1940 until his death in 1989; brother Dale Voth; sister Sharlet Baerg; stepson Johnie Arnold and stepdaughter Marlys Arnold. A Memorial service will be held at Peters Funeral Home on Saturday May 30, 2015 at 4pm.
