Grace Virginia Hughes was born November 24, 1927 in Goodman, Wisconsin to Henning and Catherine (Lange) Swanson. Grace's future husband Roy Hughes was released from World War II in California and after an intense letter writing campaign convinced Grace to come to California to get married. She finally agreed to come on January 1, 1947 and three days later they were married at Semi-Tropic. Grace served her family as a homemaker and had a green thumb when it came to caring for her many indoor green plants. Grace also enjoyed walking, she was a familiar face about town and some commented that she could walk faster then most people drive. Grace was preceded in death by her son, Thomas in 1985, daughter-in-law, Dona in 2003 and her husband of 56 years, Roy in 2003. She was 1 of 12 children, 6 of which have also preceded her in death. Surviving family include her daughter, Kathy McEwen and husband Rick of Bakersfield; son, Terry Hughes and wife Evelyn of Wasco; 5 grandchildren, Nicole Hightower, Kimberly Criswell, Tanya Gutierrez, and Michael McEwen, Jennifer Hughes; 6 great grandchildren, Adam, Madi, Jacob, Dakota, Madison and Casey; 4 brothers, and 1 sister. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 18 at 10am at Peters Funeral Chapel, Wasco for Grace Virginia Hughes, age 79, of Wasco who passed away October 15, in Bakersfield. Pastor Marshall Cuffman of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church will officiate and interment will follow at Wasco Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 17 from 2pm-8pm at Peters Funeral Home.
