IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glen Edward
Krauter
March 31, 1924 – January 19, 2022
GLEN EDWARD KRAUTER March 31, 1924 – January 19, 2022 Glen Edward Krauter, a longtime resident of rural Arvin, passed away peacefully in Wasco on January 19 at age 97, with members of his family at his side. Glen was born March 31, 1924 in Bucyrus, Ohio, one of eight children of Harry and Esther Krauter. Glen's family settled in Arvin after they purchased a farm. He attended Bakersfield High School where he excelled academically and played trumpet in the school's marching band, graduating in 1941. He proudly served in the Navy during World War II as a radio and radar technician aboard a San Diego-based destroyer. After the war, he attended Bakersfield College and enjoyed playing on the school's football team. Glen met the love his life, Eilene Taylor, in the youth group of Arvin Union Congregational Church, his spiritual home. They married on June 24, 1949. The church was the center of his and Eilene's life. There, they found a faith community in which to raise their four children and make lifelong friends. Monthly "Potluck Group' dinner parties supported these enduring friendships. Glen served as a church deacon, trustee, and treasurer, and was member of the church's bowling team. Known as the Krauter Brothers, Glen, his father, and his two brothers - Fred and John - farmed the family's land. On his own land, Glen grew cotton, potatoes, wine grapes, and for a few years, a unique specialty crop to California --- Spanish peanuts. After he retired from farming, he took computer programming classes at Bakersfield College and was hired as a computer programmer for Kern County, where he served for 17 years. He made friends with his colleagues during lunchtime poker games, and strolls to Vest Drugs for a 10-cent hotdog or a hot pastrami sandwich at Dave's Deli. After retiring from the county, Glen and Eilene built and managed the Grove Apartments in Arvin for more than 20 years, and Glen spent many hours tending a large backyard garden. His "gin-and-tonic" lime tree was especially prolific. Glen and Eilene were also lifelong adventurers. They took annual family trips in their travel trailer to Carpinteria, Death Valley, Pismo, Sequoia, Yosemite, the North Coast Redwoods, and Gold Beach, Oregon. They often spent relaxing time at the "Krauter Kabin" near Glenville where they hosted family celebrations with lots of great food. The couple traveled extensively abroad, often with Friendship Force International, an organization they enjoyed for 20 years. Through Friendship Force, they stayed with local families, immersing themselves in the culture of the countries they explored --- including Japan, New Zealand, Russia, and Germany. In return they hosted many visitors from other countries and developed lasting friendships. During the last two years of his life, Glen lived with his daughter, Sharman, caring for Eilene with the help of loving caregivers Maria Ramos and Carrie Mays. Every day until his last, he woke up ready to enjoy life - good food, great reads, golf and the Dodgers on TV, and his loving family. Glen is preceded in death by Eilene, who passed away in April, 2021. Glen is survived by two sisters; Betty Yaksitch of Bakersfield and Dorothy Klinger of Arroyo Grande; his four children and their spouses - sons Kevin Krauter (Jane) of Newberg, OR, Robert (Carol) of Woodland, CA, Randy (Leilani Paki) of Vancouver, WA, his daughter, Sharman (David) Demler of Wasco, CA; six grandchildren - Lisa (Travis) Smith, Travis Krauter, and Carl, Steven and Emily Demler, and; six great-grandchildren - Isaac, Rachel, Zach, Alice, and Benson Smith, and Michael Gordon.
