Cuneo
November 16, 1913 – July 7, 2006
George Cuneo was born November 16, 1913, in Bakersfield, California, to Dr. Peter J. and Olga Cuneo. George lived to the wonderful age of 92. After attending local schools, he completed his dental training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco and practiced in Bakersfield for many years with his brother Peter. During World War II, George served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. He spent the majority of his service in a field hospital in China after traveling through India and Burma. George was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. At the conclusion of the war, he left the Army with the rank of Captain and returned to his dental practice in Bakersfield. George became a member of Kiwanis after his son, James served as the first president of the East Bakersfield High School Key Club in 1958. He served as president of the East Bakersfield Chapter of Kiwanis in 1964. Until he was 90 years old, George served for many years as advisor for the Key Clubs at Foothill, Garces Memorial and Highland High Schools. At one time, he was also advisor at East Bakersfield High. During the years that he served as an advisor, George was also active in supporting Special Olympics. George is preceded in death by his wife, Frankie, who passed away in January of this year. He is survived by a son, James and daughter-in-law, Mary of Amador County, California and granddaughters, Jacqueline Cuneo of San Francisco, California and Christina Oakley of San Mateo, California. He is also survived by great-granddaughter, Madeline Rose Oakley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
