Obituary

George Washington Ashcraft, one of eleven children, was born February 22, 1932 in Coolidge, Arizona to Henry and Opal (Hopper) Ashcraft. His mother passed away when he was 3 years old and he was raised by his step-mother, Gertrude Lauridsen. He and his brother joined the US Air Force December 18, 1950 and George served 3 years during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he moved to Shafter where he worked as a truck driver for 60 years. He drove for Gerald Ford Trucking and Belridge Farms until his late 70's. He married Peggy Tripp and later married Judy Dunkin. George loved being with other veterans and was very active in the Shafter American Legion during the 1980's and served as post president. He was also a very hands-on grandpa; changing diapers, bottle feeding and babysitting on most weekends. George never met a stranger and had friends everywhere he went. He is survived by his children, Jack Baxter, Kathy Webb and husband Dennis and Annette Baxter; grandchildren, Steven Webb and wife Stephanie and their son, Sean; Brian Webb and his sons, Coby and Kaileb; Jarred Roark and wife Bailey; Thomas Roark; and Austen Baxter; Peggy Poston, mother of Kathy; and 7 siblings; Charlie Ashcraft, Kenneth Ashcraft, Robert Ashcraft, Trudy Jones, Sis Moore, Kathy Gough and Gloria Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Bill, Alvin and Clifford; daughter Tammy Ashcraft and wife Judy Ashcraft.A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 22 at 12:30pm at Bakersfield National Cemetery for George Washing Ashcraft, age 82, of Shafter who passed away April 14, 2014 in Bakersfield. Pastor Dean Long of the Shafter Freewill Baptist Church will officiate. Visitation will be held Monday, April 21 from 2pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter.
