IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Franklin Henry
Martens
March 3, 1922 – February 15, 2012
Franklin Henry Martens March 3, 1922 – February 15, 2012 Franklin was born on March 3, 1922, in Reedley California, to Franklin R. and Katherine (Penner) Martens. Franklin joined his two older sisters Tillie and Marie. Frank spent his childhood in Reedley, California. He received Jesus Christ as his personal savior at a young age and became a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church. God gifted him with a beautiful singing voice. His love of music and the Lord, lead him to singing in the church choir and other musical groups. In 1949, Frank participated as best man at a wedding. There he met Laura L. Schafer, from Harvey, North Dakota, the maid of honor. It was love at first sight, and they were married on July 14, 1950. They started their married life in Exeter, California. When a new job opportunity came, they moved to Shafter, California. In Shafter, Frank and Laura became active members of the Mennonite Brethren Church. Frank continued his love of music in the church choir and the male quartet. Bookkeeping was Franklin's chosen profession. Most of the jobs he held were in Delano, California: Sid Noble Cadillac, Just Chevrolet, Harvest Chevrolet, and Cal Gas. During retirement he and Laura enjoyed traveling as hosts on many bus tours throughout the United States. Frank and Laura were married 53 years, until the Lord called Laura home on Sept. 27, 2003. Frank had many interests. He had a passion for gardening, and was known for his green thumb. You could always find him in the backyard working in his rose garden, watering plants, or just enjoying a nap in the patio. He always had music playing in the house, with him whistling along. He never missed an opportunity to watch an exciting Dodger game, a great tennis match on television, or share his funny insights on life. He enjoyed a Sunday morning tradition of eggs benedict, coffee mocha, and the newspaper. A perfect day ended with a bowl of ice cream and a cup of hot tea. Due to Franklin's declining health he moved to Glenwood Gardens, for skilled nursing. We would like to thank the staff and Dr. Memon for his daily care. A special thank you to Bonnie and Optimal Hospice, for their help in his last days. Franklin was preceded in death by his wife Laura, parents, and sister, Marie Warkentin. He is survived by his sister, Tillie Martens of Reedley California, son Frank G. Martens of Midland Texas, daughter Beth Martens of Bakersfield, and daughter Jane Collier (Brian) of Duncan, South Carolina. He is also survived by his granddaughter Maegan Kelso and great- granddaughter Tallulah Kelso, of Duncan, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to Optimal Hospice of Bakersfield. A private interment will be scheduled at a later date.
