Frances Irene Conn was born July 16, 1931 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; the oldest of seven children born to Doshie Rachel (Thompson) and Luther Claude Butcher, Sr. The family moved to Shafter in 1942 and Frances graduated from Shafter High School. She married Joe Brown and he preceded her in death in 1958. She moved to Ventura, then Oxnard and remarried a navy officer and they followed his career to San Diego, Japan, Oakland, Hawaii and Virginia Beach. She was living in San Diego when she decided to move back to Shafter to care for her sick mother. Frances was known to many people as the cashier at the Mobil Station (later BP and Chevron), a job she loved because of the people she met. In her younger years, she worked in the Shafter potato sheds, the as a cashier for Sprouse Ritz, Cornets, Cress in Bakersfield and Kmart in San Diego. Frances enjoyed bowling in leagues when she was young and was an excellent cook and seamstress. She loved her old Pontiac with the stick shift and complained about having to use cars with an automatic transmission. Frances was an all-around sweet person, who everyone loved. Frances is survived by her daughter, Cindy Conn of Sacramento; brothers, B.B. Butcher and wife Carol of Ventura and Luther Butcher, Jr. and wife Kathy of Oregon; sisters, Vivian Barlow and Nettie Butcher, both of Shafter and Roselind June Spriggs of Colorado; three grandsons, Ricky, David and Daniel and 1 great-grandson. She is also survived by a host of loving family members including many nieces, nephews and cousins. She had a close and loving relationship with her great-great nieces, Kyra, Willow and Sydney. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Doshie; a seven-year-old sister, Mary Joann Butcher; and her husband Reginald "Joe" Brown. A graveside service will be held Friday, August 22, at 2pm at Shafter Memorial Park for Frances Irene Conn, age 83 of Shafter who passed away August 19, 2014 in Bakersfield. Pastor Jim Glasco of the 7th Standard Pentecostal Church of God will officiate and interment will follow. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 21 from 4pm to 8pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter.
