IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Fern Irene
Gaede
March 14, 1916 – August 28, 2013
On August 28, 2013 Fern Gaede passed into eternal life to be reunited with her beloved husband, Harvey. Fern was born on March 14, 1916 in Lodi, California to Dan and Margaretha Wendland. In 1923 the family, including sisters Edna and Erma, moved to Shafter, California to farm. Fern attended Richland Elementary and graduated from Shafter High School in 1932. Four years later she married Harvey Gaede and they built their life in Shafter with many wonderful friends centered around the Mennonite Brethren Church. As Harvey managed a successful career in both automobile and farming ventures, Fern was a devoted Homemaker. During these years she particularly enjoyed singing in the church choir. In 1975 the couple retired to Bakersfield where they became charter members of the Laurelglen Bible Church and spent many an afternoon playing golf at Kern City and Stockdale Country Club. Blessed with good health they often traveled with friends. After 1999 Harvey and Fern resided at the Rosewood Retirement Center for the remainder of their days. The family would like to thank Rosewood for their loving support. It has been written that this Era in America produced the "Greatest Generation". Harvey and Fern epitomized the faith, work-ethic and devotion to family and community which characterized these self-reliant people. Fern leaves a son, Ken, and his wife Joanne residents of Fresno. Also two grandchildren Scott (Keri) in London, England and Brooke (Marissa) in Milford Connecticut. Also two great-grandchildren Alex and Sia. A Graveside Service will be held for Fern conducted by Peters Funeral Home at 11a.m. on Friday Sept 6 at Shafter Memorial Park preceded by a visitation at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter at 10 a.m. Roger Poppen will officiate.
