A memorial service for Esther Loreen Hengst will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 59077 Yucca Trail in Yucca Valley. A 65-year resident of California and a 26-year resident of Morongo Valley, Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley, Mrs. Hengst died Sept. 10, 2008. She was 85 years old. The daughter of George and Pauline Helmkamp, she was born Dec. 20, 1922, a native of Eustis, Neb. Mrs. Hengst was a schoolteacher for 20 years and a homemaker who raised a large family. She made a significant contribution as resident docent at Morongo Wildlife Reserve and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Yucca Valley. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Elwood August Hengst, who is 92 years old; brother George of San Jose; son Timothy and his wife, Jeanne, of Thousand Oaks; son Chris and his wife, Alice, of Alpaugh; son Joel and his wife, Anna, of San Diego; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Mrs.. Hengst's family requests memorials be sent to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Korea Gospel Mission in Phoenix, Ariz., or the Way Station in Joshua Tree.
