Elvina Avants was born on March 22nd, 1928 in Maysville, Oklahoma. She arrived in Shafter, California where she went on to attend Shafter High School. Elvina married Ray Cummings in 1946 and they had three children, Randy, Carol and Ted. They raised their family in Shafter, California where Elvina was very active in the Southern Baptist Church. Elvina enjoyed cooking, cross-stitching, vacationing with Ray and spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities. She also enjoyed watching many Dodger games. She was preceded in death by parents John and Bytha Avants, brother Tommy Avants and husband of 68 years, Ray Cummings. She is survived by children, Randy and Carol Cummings, Carol Unruh, and Ted and Pam Cummings; grandchildren, Ken and Virginia Greene, Jason Unruh, Brian and Vanessa Ogle, Jeff Unruh and Karrie, and Alexandra Cummings; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Rachel, Madelynn, Megan, Andrew, Aron , Jessica and many nieces and nephews. Elvina was loved by many and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her. The family would like to give a special thank you to Around the Clock Care, Brookdale and Hoffmann Hospice. Visitation was held Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 4-8pm at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. Funeral Service was on Thursday, February 11, 2016 beginning at 10am at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. Pastor Brent Cummings officiated and interment followed at Shafter Memorial Park.
