Obituary

Our beautiful mother, the foundation of our family, has left us to join our heavenly Father. We were shaped by her lovely example of Godly nurture, so her gifts will be carried on by her children and grandchildren in her honor as they are embodied in our personalities through her love. Ella was born in rural Shafter in 1925 to Henry M. and Justina Siemens Dueck. She graduated from Maple School and Wasco High School, excelling in music and sports. She later graduated from Biola with a degree in Child Evangelism. After college, she worked as a Child Evangelism Fellowship missionary to the many children who were then living in labor camps in Shafter. Eventually, she started teaching at the South Shafter Mennonite Brethren chapel, where she met her future husband Robert Bergman. They married in 1950, began farming, and started their family. Although they worked at "regular" jobs, God's work was their calling. Ella suffered a huge blow when her beloved husband was suddenly taken from her in 1982. Though her health had been fragile, she knew her young family needed her, and she came back strong to lead her family and help her sons take over the farming business. She never retired as a farm partner, and was also a founding board member of the Shafter Community Bible Study, where she served up until this past week. Ella met her heavenly Father face to face on Tuesday, November 26, about 11 am with her family holding her hand and singing her favorite songs together in harmony. She joined her parents, her big sisters Esther Dueck and Tina Neufeld, her husband Robert, and her son Kevin in heaven. She leaves to cherish all the memories her big sister Susie Wohlgemuth, her daughter Sandy and husband Dwayne Armstrong, her son Randy and wife Chris, and her daughter-in-law Elaine; her grandchildren Chrissie, Darren and Julie, and Nathan Armstrong, Kenny and Seleena, Desiree and Valaree Bergman, and Jessica and Richard Bergman. She has recently been blessed by the addition of her first great grandchildren, Falcon and Indigo Armstrong. She also leaves her beloved sisters-in-law Margie Bobst and Betty Bergman, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A graveside service under the direction of Peters Funeral Home will be held on Tuesday, December 3, at 1pm at Shafter Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2:30pm at Valley Bible Church, Shafter. Viewing will be held at Peters Funeral Home Monday, Dec. 2, from 2pm to 5pm.
