Edna Louise Nicks was born in Bakersfield, California on January 30, 1918 to Anna Burkhardt and Abraham F. Boese. She came to Shafter where she was raised, attended local schools and graduated from Shafter High School. Edna met and married her sweetheart, Murel in 1943; the wedding was held at her parents' Shafter home on Los Angeles Avenue. They were both long time "Rock Hounds" as members of Kern County Gems and Mineral Society; anytime they had the opportunity they'd take the family out camping and hiking to find rock and gem treasures. Her children have fond memories of Edna's Sunday meals when they were living at home; she was a wonderful cook. Edna enjoyed the outdoors and showed her passion for the great outdoors thru her oil paintings of steams, mountains, trees and nature. She was an active member of Green Acres First Baptist Church, now Grace Baptist. Edna went to meet her Lord and Savior Wednesday morning, April 14, 2010, peacefully at home. Family preceding her in death are infant son Thomas Nicks (1945); loving husband of 42 years Murel E. Nicks (1986) and is survived by her sons, Curtis, Stanley and wife Mary; daughter, Brenda and husband Ray Collins; sisters, Aldeen Slitor , Donna and husband Art Penner; 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and extended family members. Pastors Rollin Strode and Andy Prince will officiate funeral services for Edna Louise Nicks, age 92, Monday, April 19, 2010 – 10am at Grace Baptist Church, 2550 Jewetta Ave, Bakersfield; interment will immediately follow at Shafter Memorial Park. Peters Funeral Home – Shafter will be hosting a visitation Sunday, April 18th from 2 to 5pm in their chapel.
