IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doyce L.
Coffman
November 12, 1934 – July 28, 2020
Doyce L. Coffman passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 in Shafter, CA. He was born on November 12, 1934 in Montgomery County Arkansas to Arthur and Katie Coffman. He was the youngest of 6 children, if only slightly younger than his twin sister. His family moved to California in 1947 and he graduated from Wasco High in 1951. Doyce attended U.C. Davis for two years and during that time he fell in love with Elaine M. Olson. They married on November 20, 1956 while he served in the U.S. Army, and were happily married until her death (d.January 13, 2011). Together they raised three daughters. Doyce graduated with a B.S. in Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1960 and shortly thereafter began working as a chemical engineer for the Union Carbide Company (later his division would become the company Praxair). He worked more than 40 years at various positions traveling to various cities throughout the world, to work on the design, maintenance and optimization of systems that purify gases for medical and industrial use. He enjoyed his job immensely, and even when not working, he enjoyed mechanical and mathematical problem solving. Doyce took pride in working hard to provide for his family. After retirement, he tried to create some new challenges to show his love- like trying to grow blueberries for his grandchildren in the inhospitable Sacramento heat or tending roses outside of the kitchen window for Elaine to enjoy. After a stroke in 2004, his physical abilities diminished, but he still had the energy and ability to indulge his passion for game-playing. In his free time, Doyce always enjoyed playing games. He spent many evenings teaching his young daughters game rules and strategies. He shared his love for games with them from a very early age. In Amherst, New York, where he was headquartered for the majority of his career, he played cards with different groups of friends 2-3 times per week. During this time, he achieved the status of Life Master from the North American Contract Bridge League. Later in life, he could be found more often enjoying other games, but he still always wanted to compete (and win, if possible). In particular, his family has many fond memories of dominoes, 42, and pinochle. Most family gatherings would include a rousing game of 42 where the "Ewing Convention" was a particularly favorite family rule that either brought laughter or grimaces from the players. Doyce is survived by his three daughters, Cheryl Coffman, Janet Walker and Kristin Haddad (Mark), 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and his twin sister, Loyce Corcoran. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Elaine M. Coffman, parents, and siblings Margie, Carl, Vivian, and Kenneth.
