IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Marie
Sukut
October 1, 1921 – January 16, 2012
Dorothy Sukut October 1, 1921 - January 16, 2012 Dorothy Sukut, Aunt Dot, Mrs. Leo, Mom and Grandma were the names we knew her by. On Monday, January 16th, God's hand touched her and she slept. Born in Murphysboro, Illinois, in 1921 to Norman C. and Alma Baker, Dorothy grew up in Centralia, Illinois. Her father, provided well for his family and many others during the depression passing this ability to help others to Dorothy. After high school Dorothy attended William Woods College, Fulton, Missouri. Sunday Supper was a formal affair and in those days going off campus meant you wore hat and gloves. After college graduation Dorothy entered nurses training at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis where 3 months before graduation she met and fell in love with an airman from Shafter, California, Leo Sukut. In those days nurses training allowed single females only. So six weeks before graduation and six weeks after they met Dorothy chose Leo and they were married. That marriage lasted 53 years until Leo's death in 1995. They were partners in love, family and work. After returning from the war Leo bought Wasco Radio, repairing radios while Dorothy handled the finances and helped sell radios, phonographs, guitars and harmonicas. Soon television emerged and Leo's T.V. became a social center in the business district of Wasco. Often people would stop to talk and confide in Dorothy, who many called Mrs. Leo. Dorothy gave life to three children, Judy, Leasa and Chuck. Our mother gave us the best education by taking us to "the Shop" where we would not only look out the window and observe life in our little town of Wasco, but learn how "a living was made". Mom had a compassionate way of explaining life as well as do's and don'ts to her children. After retirement our Mom and Dad took many happy trips in their motor home and enjoyed sitting on their patio in the evening breeze. Thank you mom for the special way you taught us that we are better than no man, to tell the truth even when it hurts and to show kindness for others. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Leo Sukut, daughter Judith Sukut-Reiter, parents Norman and Alma Baker and brother-in-law Art Parrott. Left to take pleasure in many happy memories, daughter Leasa Engel (Jim), son Chuck Sukut (Carolyn); sister, Norma Parrott of Wasco; brother, Hal Baker (Joyce) of Forest, Virginia; the delights of her life, grandsons, Nick and Sam Sukut; step-granddaughter, Zoe Weber-Porter; sister-in-law, Margaret Sukut, all of Bakersfield; nieces and nephews, Rod, Wayne and Dennis Knittel, Debbie and Bob Parrott, Kelly Clanton and Curtis Sukut, Julie and Laurie Baker. We will always be grateful for her friends in Clarebridge and Skilled Nursing at Glenwood Gardens, who showed her how much they loved her, and Hoffmann Hospice especially Colleen and Modie who made her comfortable and ready to enter God's presence. A graveside service will be held at Shafter Memorial Park on Saturday, January 28th, at 12:00pm Noon. A time to share happy memories will follow at Hodel's Country Dining, Olive Drive and Hwy 99. Donations in Dorothy's honor can be made to Hoffmann Hospice, 8501 Brimhall Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93312
