Dorothy Kroeker Neufeld was born November 28, 1932 in Buhler, Kansas to Annie Friesen Kroeker and Jack Kroeker. The family moved to Shafter, California and Dorothy married Donald Neufeld September 4, 1953. Dorothy and Don lived in Denver while Don completed his 1-W Volunteer service and then they returned to Shafter where Don farmed. Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper for K & M Potato Shed and secretary at West Kern Machinery. Dorothy owned and operated Shafter Flower and Gift from 1981 until 2007. She then returned to school and became a massage therapist. Dorothy was active at the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church where she and Don served as Deacons; she also worked in AWANA and as a Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. One of her church projects was landscaping in front of the Sunday School wing. She and her students collected offering to buy the plants, and then planted them. Dorothy and Don had many friends and enjoyed different social groups including a group from high school that met monthly for lunch, starting out at over 25 people and now has 6 regulars. They also had breakfast every Friday with 4 other couples and a third group they celebrated anniversaries with. Dorothy is survived by her husband of 57 years, Donald Neufeld of Shafter; children, Debby Sperling of Shafter, Brian Neufeld of Shafter, Leanne Neufeld of El Sobrante and Matthew Neufeld and wife Courtney of Bakersfield; grandchildren, Sidney Sperling and Dawneal Sperling; brothers, Leland Kroeker and wife Peggy of Shafter and Kenny Kroeker and wife Betty of Bakersfield. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Irene Unruh in 1991 and Mamie Janzen in 1999. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 26 at 1pm at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church for Dorothy K. Neufeld, age 78, who passed away April 21, 2001 in Bakersfield. Pastor Pat Coyle will officiate the service and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. Visitations will be held Monday, April 25 from 4pm to 8pm and Tuesday, April 26 from 10am to noon at Peters Funeral Home
