Doreen Beth Bartel died Sunday, December 27, 2009 after an extended illness. She was born to Menno F. and Martha Reimer on February 10, 1932, near Corn, Oklahoma, and spent her childhood in Oklahoma before moving with her family to Michigan and then to a farm near Custer, Washington. She graduated from Ferndale High School, Ferndale, WA, and attended Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS and Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA. In 1956 she married Marvin Bartel and moved to rural Bakersfield (Rosedale). She worked as a substitute school teacher while helping her husband in the start-up of their family business, Abate-a-Weed. As the business expanded to include a partner, she worked as a bookkeeper and gained her Pest Control Advisor license. She retired from the business after the death of her husband in 1986. Doreen was a longtime member of the Rosedale Bible Church. She had a warm, vibrant presence that made her much loved by friends and family. Doreen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters, Lorraine Fast of Washington, and Clarice Rempel of Kansas. She is survived by her son, Timothy D. Bartel of San Luis Obispo; her daughter, Jeannine Guiffre and husband Joseph of Tehachapi; three grandsons, Patrick Kelty and Robert Kelty of Bakersfield, and A.J. Guiffre of Techachapi; a brother, Eldred Reimer and wife Kay of Ferndale, WA; and sisters Elizabeth Fast of Bellingham, WA, and Jean Fleming and husband Al of Bakersfield. She will also be mourned by many nieces and nephews and her caregiver, Sydney Ncau. Visitation is Monday, January 4, from 2-8 p.m., at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. A graveside service will be held at Shafter Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. on January 5, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at the Rosedale Bible Church.
