Obituary

Don Wayne Benbow December 12, 1945 – October 27, 2006 A funeral service will be held Thurs., November 2, 2006 at 10am at the outdoor chapel of the south Kern Cemetery District, Arvin for Don Wayne Benbow, 60, of Bakersfield who passed away at home October 27, 2006. Pastor Craig Amos of the Arvin Assembly of god Church will officiate with interment following. Viewing for don will be held Wednesday, November 1, 2006 from 2-8pm at Arvin Funeral Home. Don was born December 12, 1945 to Ira and Evelyn Benbow in Bakersfield, California. He attended Arvin High School in 1964. Don was a member of the Calvary Baptist Chirch. He also volunteered for Kern Epilepsy Society. Don was an important and vital member of the adult Circles of Understanding support group. In his own quiet way, he helped others with epilepsy by giving his understanding and experience to those who needed it. His "other" family was those who worked in the office of the agency. He freely gave support, understanding and love to those who needed it. Don was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Society of Kern County, and gave important input to the business of the agency. Don took care of people in little ways from making coffee at the office to driving his friend Patsey Connors car when she broke her wrist last year. He went with her when she was called that mother Mom was dying, and supported her during that time of loss. He had strong, simple values that he lived by and credited his upbringing to those values. He talked often of growing up in Arvin with his brothers and sisters, and the love he had for his parents and family. He worked as an irrigator for Guimarra Vineyards for over 25 years. He will be so missed by the epilepsy community, and by those he worked with every day. His volunteering at the agency became his job, and he was there faithfully every day. He received the Paula Wagner Vignolo Award in 2004 given to a support group member who has done the most for the agency during the year. Don is survived by his father, Ira Benbow; his son, Don Vernon Benbow; his brothers, Tom and wife Jan Benbow and Ken and wife Dona Benbow; his sisters, Janet and husband Tom Goss and Diane Cushman; his Uncle Leland and wife Dolly Brown; nieces and nephews, Toby, Lane, Josh, April, Amber and Jen. Don is preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Benbow.
