Obituary

Richard Rae Garriott November 08,1948 - April 17, 2021 Dick was raised and lived his life here in Bakersfield with his parents Betty and Jack Garriott and 2 younger sisters Nancy and Melody. With Dick being quite a bit older, he was always their big brother throughout life. While Betty was catering to the girls, Dick spent his time with his Dad Jack owner and operator of Garriott Crop Dusting at the Bakersfield airpark where Dick's love and passion for flying all began. He soloed his first plane at 16 and achieved his pilot's license before his drivers license. Dick went to Bakersfield High where he played football and baseball. Dick joined the army serving in South Korea and playing football. After the Army, Dick attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and earned a degree in business. He then returned to Bakersfield and eventually took over the family business, Garriott Crop Dusting. Dick achieved and held many certifications as a pilot; he piloted helicopters and planes. He was an agricultural journeyman, commercial pilot, and flight instructor. After Dick retired he traveled up and down California giving classes in Continued Education for Pesticide Application for almost 16yrs. If you took one of Dick's classes you were in for a treat, Dick would BBQ and offer up some of his witty humor for lunch. Dick also flew for Inland Crop Dusters for many years and was still flying earlier this year for them. Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman his whole life and did so with the same group of guys for the last 40 plus years. Every year they went to South Dakota to pheasant hunt, Elko Nevada for fishing, and many other yearly trips. If he wasn't flying or hunting he was cooking. Dick would make his famous macaroni salad for every trip. Dick lived a very profound and passionate life doing what he loved right up to his last day. Dick didn't miss that last hunting trip or the last duck season, he did it all. Dick is leaving behind his loving hunting dog Molly Rae, his Beautiful Daughters Anne Smith and Emily Rammelmeier that he loved dearly, his Girlfriend of 12 years Tammy Lee Zaninovich, his Sisters Nancy Garriott and Melody Garriott and his circle of lifelong Friends. A Celebration of Dick's life will be held on Friday, May 14th at 11:30am at Inland Crop Dusters @ Minter Field Airport in Shafter.
