IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dearl James
Dial
November 16, 1933 – April 14, 2024
Dearl J Dial, as known to many as Lefty, was born on November 16, 1933, to Stella Dial and Sam Dial in Oklahoma. During their time in Oklahoma, the Dust Bowl hit their land and ruined their crops. In hopes of finding work as a young family, they headed west to the land of milk and honey (California). They traveled to San Diego when Dearl was a young boy. He loved playing in the park and wandering the streets of Old Town San Diego. When Dearl was a bit older, he moved to Lamont, CA. It was here that he began to help the family by working in the fields, picking cotton on hot summer days.
Dearl went to Bakersfield High School and was a part of the baseball team. He played center field and was the leadoff hitter for the varsity baseball team his senior year. In 1951, he was drafted into the Korean Conflict. He was enlisted into the ARMY at the age of 17. He was shipped to Germany after boot camp and was given the opportunity of a life time. Since the commanding officer was a tremendous baseball fan, he orchestrated a baseball league in Europe. Hundreds of men tried out for the league at his base and only two people were selected, Dearl and one other gentleman. So, when asked about his time in the military, he would say, "It was great! I traveled Europe and played baseball."
When Dearl was out of the military he moved to the Bakersfield area, and began working at a local drug store. He worked is way up to manager and realized after about 18 years he wanted to try something new. He left the drug store and began a new adventure as a novelty wholesale dealer. He would travel around to local gas stations, mini markets, and other businesses selling items such as hats, sun glasses, beef jerky, etc. He loved being his own boss and the challenges that came with it.
Dearl loved to be outdoors and smoking cigars. He was a tremendous athlete and fierce competitor. There really is nothing he couldn't do if he put his mind to it. Dearl loved to fish and hunt when he was younger. When he was older he was introduced to the golf world and he never really looked back. He was naturally gifted at the sport and he was a scratch golfer.
He is survived by his sister Doris, his son Greg, daughter-in-law Brenda, grandchildren Gemma, Gillian, Declan, and Gwendolyn. Dearl died at the age of 90 years old at his home with his son and family by his side.
