IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Daniel R.
Widen 'Whitey'
January 10, 1935 – June 20, 2009
Retired, United States Navy Daniel Widen was born on January 10, 1935, in Bemidji, Minnesota, and he passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, California on June 20, 2009. Daniel is survived by his stepchildren Karen (Roger Sr.) Coughenour, Karla Ayon, Margie Hudgens, Colleen (Max) Miller, Heather Pressley and Duke Rescola (Edna). He is also survived by two sisters: Clara Schollian of San Diego, California, and Sally Mier of Ponte Verde, Florida. Additionally, he is survived by his former wife, Mary of Wasco, California, as well as numerous step- grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dan enlisted in the United States Navy upon graduating high school and served his country faithfully for 20 years before retirement in 1974. After retiring from the military, he began a career as a marine electrician in Long Beach, California. Upon retirement from this career, he was led into the lighting business, where he worked for many years until his health failed him, and he was no longer able to physically work. Even though his health was poor, he remained living very independently for several years after surviving two major cancer surgeries and treatments and a stroke, which had left him completely paralyzed on his left side. He had a great desire to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. Before his health failed him, he was an avid train enthusiast. He spent practically every weekend in Torrance, California, establishing a round house and yard for the Southern California Live Steamers. Most of the trees which are still growing there had been planted and nurtured by him. He was very proud to be able to contribute to this project for so many years; he thoroughly enjoyed his time spent there and gave of it very generously. While residing in Bakersfield, he made his home at Emeritus (formerly Laurel Springs) and Carriage House Estates. He received much pleasure getting to know the other residents, assisting them whenever he could. More than anything, however, he enjoyed giving away special gifts such as stuffed animals and candy to others. Dan fought a hard fight for many years, never wanting to give up. Much appreciation is extended to the people who, over the years, have been a friend to Dan. He cherished your friendships and kindnesses. His family would especially like to thank Christine at Emeritus for her understanding and compassion as we tried to make his last days as comfortable as possible for him. A memorial service is being planned for a date yet to be determined, as Dan's desire was that he be laid to rest at a National Cemetery. His desire will be fulfilled with full military honors at the beautiful new Bakersfield National Cemetery. Services will be held on July 9, 2009 – 1:30 pm.
