April 12, 1923 – September 28, 2008
Charley Reed Carlton went home to be with the Lord on September 28, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Willie Mae Carlton, parents Joseph and Murel Carlton, brothers, Everett, Boyd, Roy, Clint and Tommy Carlton, Charley is also survived by his two children Ken Carlton and wife Shirley of St. George, Utah and daughter Charlene Lumsden and husband Barry of Bakersfield, California. Grandchildren Rick Carlton and family of Fairfield, Calif., Dr. Christine Carlton of Michigan, Jennifer Garcia and family of Ramona, California and Joey Janzen and family of Bakersfield, California. He leaves behind his wife Bernelle. Her children, Betty, Larry, Russell and Andrea and families. Charley was loved and became a part Bernelle's family - the Thompson's, Well's and Affentrangers. He is also survived by brothers Claude Robert, Kenneth Earl and Ray Carlton and many nieces and nephews. Charley was a veteran of World War II – while serving overseas he was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon completion of his military commitment he returned to the area of Stigler, Okla., met and married Willie Mae Few. As the years passed Charley and Willie Mae became owners of Carlton's Union 76 Service Station in Shafter and Carlton's Tire Service – serving the community for 27 years. Upon retirement, Charley and Willie Mae hit the roads in their RV – traveling with best buddies Pat and Johnnie Lowe. They were proud members of the Shafter RV Club. Charley was active with his brother-in-law, Bill Few, and his Outreach Ministry of Bakersfield. He lived and was blessed with a full life. The last twelve years he and wife Bernelle were able to travel, spending time with friends and family. Bernelle's family became his family and he loved them very much. Our families wish to express heartfelt thanks to all that visited Charley during his time at Carrington House in Shafter. Thank you to Hoffman Hospice for their care and concern. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 – 10 a.m. at Shafter Cemetary. Pallbearers are Mike Patrick, Louie DeWitt, Dewayne Armstrong, Nick Sylvester, Martin Affentranger and Marty Affentranger. Honorary Pallbears are Johnnie Lowe, Johnnie Saulsbarry,L.F. Cornelius,Lyndon Payne, Jay Atkinson and Ken Smith. What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us." Helen Keller
