IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Caleb Andrew
Hannink
December 5, 1996 – November 15, 2012
CALEB ANDREW HANNINK December 5, 1996 - November 15, 2012 Caleb Andrew Hannink was welcomed into this life on December 5,1996. His big sister Mia, Mom and Dad flew to South Dakota to complete his adoption. He made so much noise his first night that big sister wanted to "give him back." He was long awaited and much beloved by family and friends. He loved Jesus and was welcomed into Heaven on November 15, 2012. It wasn't long after infancy that Caleb's high activity levels commenced. His Uncle Mike called him a "locomotive." A happy and curious boy, "Mr. C.", was always moving; climbing, searching, running, jumping and looking for his next adventure. He was enthusiastic about everything. He enjoyed electronic games and loved going to GameStor, swimming, bike riding and dress-up activities. He had a fierce imagination and loved to draw and tell jokes. He was very interested in both Greek and Roman mythology. He would exuberantly dance while watching the movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". He loved music and singing, possessing a beautiful baritone voice. He was physically agile, loved PE and could have stayed there all day, if allowed. He lived life BIG! His affectionate nature preceded him. Caleb was a member at Valley Baptist Church and also attended youth groups at The Bridge Bible Church. We are so grateful for the sensitivity that the youth leaders demonstrated and modeled during his time there. His long time, faithful friend Jeremy Shavinsky and family were very important to him. Caleb began school at Mercy Preschool Center and attended Norris Elementary, Olive Drive Elementary and Norris Middle School. He was a sophomore at Centennial High School in Bakersfield, California and loved being a Golden Hawk. Although he had Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD, he was a spontaneous, intense young man with a zest for life. He had little guile and was very literal. He believed that anyone in close proximity was his friend. He did not possess the innate capacity to see evil in others. He was an emotionally transparent, open soul and endeared himself to an enormous number of people because he was so real. He was "all in", 100 percent. In 2010, Caleb received an additional diagnosis of dialated ventricular cardiomyopathy. He was fortunate to have excellent support from teachers, speech therapists, resource help, educational shadow, Ken Gabin, ADHD pediatrician, John Digges, M.D. Ph.D., psychiatrist Lance Steinberg, M.D., pediatric cardiologist, Jondavid Menteer, M.D., Brandy Roggentien, L.C.S.W. and CVS Pharmacy personel at Town and Country. In an attempt to harness Caleb's energy, he worked out at In-Shape Gym where employees showed unfailing kindness, patience and indulgence towards him. Special thanks to the entire staff and students at Centennial High School who loved and cared for Caleb. Additional thanks to Hall Ambulance personnel and emergency room staff at Bakersfield Heart Hospital. Your compassion is deeply appreciated. Caleb is survived by his parents, Brad and Maren Hannink and his older sister, Mia of Bakersfield. He is also survived by his maternal grandfather, Leonard Choate of Modesto. Other survivors include aunts and uncles; Karen Hull of Claremont, Jayne and Jim Kerr of Modesto, Hope and Jim Melton of Bakersfield, Faith and Daryl Moret of Ripon, Gerrit and Shelly Hannink of La Mesa, and Lance Hannink of Ripon. Cousins include Angie Moret, Sunnyvale, Ben Moret, Baltimore, MD, Whitney Moret, Washington, D.C., Annelise Bertrand, Los Angeles, Jennifer (Jonathan) Abshire of Altanta, GA, Matthew (Shannon) Hull, Cypress, TX, Rebecca Hull, Claremont, Eric Hamilton, Modesto, Sarah Hamilton, Merced, Natasha (Stein) Ericsson, Bakersfield. His grandparents, Harm and Jennielavon Hannink and Virginia Choate, and Uncles Mike Bertrand and Martin Hamilton predeceased him. Caleb also leaves behind a gracious, loving birth family in South Dakota. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 24, 2012, at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93308. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to Mission at Kern County (formerly known as the Bakersfield Rescue Mission) or Focus on the Family.
