IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty
Bergman
November 2, 1931 – January 1, 2021
Betty Lou Bergman was born to Abe & Susie Isaac on November 2, 1931 in Shafter, California. Brother Don was born 5 years later. When she was eight, her parents adopted Vernon Unruh, who was 11 years old, a distant relative in Canada. Betty attended Maple School through eighth grade and then Wasco High. Music was integral throughout her life. She chose music major in high school and sang in various choirs and groups, participated in musicals, and played the piano & clarinet. Betty met Lowell Bergman in the Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church. They both sang in the church choir and started dating during their senior year in high school. Betty attended Pacific Bible Institute (now Fresno Pacific University) for a year and a half. Lowell proposed to her, she returned to Shafter, and they were married on May 11, 1951. They had two children, Lucy (9/2/52), and Gordon (2/10/55). Betty lived her entire life in Shafter. Faith, family and music were the center pieces of her life. She made her most important decision, surrendering her life to follow Jesus Christ, at the age of 10 (12/3/41). She was baptized several years later. She also knelt with Lucy and Gordon (ages 6 and 4) to pray with them as they accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Her commitment to Christ was her all-in-all. In a written testimony from 1989, she said the following: "So, the bottom line is: Christ is such an integral part of my everyday life, I can't imagine being without Him." She was true to Jesus to the very end. She was always thankful to the Lord for all He had done for her. Betty was a homemaker and musician. She found joy in looking after her family and others by cooking, cleaning, and entertaining. She and Lowell together, enjoyed entertaining family and friends: their home was a place of hospitality and music. Betty was born and gifted with music in her heart. She had perfect pitch: you could hit a key on the piano or sing a note and she could tell you what note it was. She began piano lessons at age six, and became a piano teacher in 1958, a career lasting for 40 years. She sang solos, duets/trios/quartets with Lowell/others, small ensembles, choirs (including on the radio, and touring with the Words of the Gospel group), and pianist for these groups and playing piano numbers. While her repertoire was wide, music expressing her faith in Christ was dominant. Betty enjoyed gardening and beautifying the yard with flowers. She participated in various church and community activities in Shafter and Bakersfield. She enjoyed being dressed nicely. When Lowell retired from farming, they began traveling some each year, seeing parts of the U.S. and Canada. She delighted in these road trips. A childhood memory may have fed this love: she traveled with her parents to Canada to bring cousin Vernon and his two brothers (each brother was adopted by a different family) back to California; a trip lasting 2 months. Betty Bergman lived a life of gratitude and courage. After being ill for a year as a toddler, her kidneys were damaged. She was diagnosed with kidney disease after Lucy was born. She was able to live a normal life until age 84. Then she started dialysis. As her health declined in these final years, her gratitude and courage rose to new levels. She expressed gratitude to God and to others who came alongside her to assist her. She showed courage during difficult days early on and as her health declined. She passed away on January 1, 2021. She leaves a legacy of faith, giving and music. Betty is survived by her daughter, Lucy and husband John; son Gordon and wife Melinda; brother Don and wife Connie Isaac; six grandchildren and spouses; fifteen great grandchildren; and many other family and friends that she loved well. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
