IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bernita Lorraine
(Huffman) Landis
September 12, 1921 – February 23, 2008
Bernita passed peacefully to join our Lord and Savior Saturday afternoon. She was preceded by her loving husband Elmer of 66 years, her brother Clinton Huffman and her two sisters, Marjorie Cox and Irene Williams. She is survived by her son Gary and his wife Pamela, son Larry and his wife Susan, grandson Brian and his wife Melissa and great granddaughter Kari, grandson Griffin and his wife Elaine and great-granddaughter Olivia, granddaughter Erin, and granddaughter Michelle Gearhardt and her husband Kyle and great-grandson Jacob. Her family was her delight and she never missed an opportunity to see and be with us, especially the children. She was their Nana and Great Gramma Landis. Bernita was the youngest daughter of Clinton and Leota Huffman. She was raised on a small farm in Armona, California and graduated from Hanford High School in 1939. Instilled at an early age with responsibility and self-discipline, her sense of organization, economics and planning never left her. She met Elmer at a harvest dance at the ranch where he was raised and they married in 1941. When Elmer enlisted in the army in 1943, she gladly joined him and other army couples while the men were trained in Texas and Oklahoma. In later years she fondly remembered the camp songs, dancing, and fun the young couples had, and the friendships that endured for several generations. Bernita worked as a loan officer for many years for Colonel Nichols and Cy Wade at General Mortgage Co. and later with other lending institutions. She always treasured the personal and professional relationships from those productive days. Wherever she went, she made friends. She and Elmer loved to travel and visit their old army friends back east. And she loved to relate their experiences traveling with the Eagles Camper Club and the horseshoe tournaments with the Bakersfield Shoe Crew. Bernita was a regular attendee at Northminster Presbyterian Church and she did not hide her light under a bushel. She believed that she was saved by the grace of God and looked forward to rejoining Elmer and her family in heaven. "O death where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" It was Bernita's wish that no tears be shed for her at a funeral service. Family and friends will meet to celebrate her life this Saturday.
