Bernice Corene (Reed) Turpin was born in Corona, California, to James and Ruby Reed, on July 17, 1933 and shortly after the family moved to Shafter. Bernice attended Shafter elementary schools and Shafter High School. On December 7, 1949 she and William Reed were married and they continued to make Shafter their home until 1959 when they moved to Bellflower. Bernice worked for the telephone company, and then began her career in healthcare, first at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles as a nurse's aid then as a physical therapist. She also served as a foster mother for many years with children in transition. Bernice love to travel, Hawaii being her favorite destination which she visited 6 times. She also traveled to Costa Rica and North Carolina, Missouri and Oklahoma to visit relatives. Her family enjoyed her baking, especially her banana nut bread and applesauce cake with cinnamon and sugar. Bernice also was known for her collection of pigs. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, William on August 9 1992; and her parents, James and Ruby. She is survived by her sons, Terry and wife, Martha Turpin of Bellflower, and Gary Turpin of Hollydale; 3 grandchildren, Greg and wife, Carla Turpin, Stacey and husband, Joe Cohen, Jeffrey and wife, Christina Turpin; great grandchildren, Dallas, Avalea, and Nakita; cousins, Betty and husband, Carl Cotton; and many other loving family members. A funeral service will be held at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 10am, for Bernice Reed Turpin, age 74, of Bellflower, who passed away September 3, 2007, in Bellflower. Pastor Clinton Goines, retired pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God will officiate the service and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at Peters Funeral Home on Friday, September 7, 2007, from 2pm to 8pm.
