Barbara Caroline Grundt was born February 11, 1920 in Washington, DC to Albert Cowles Daley and Ruby (Johnson) Daley. Barbara attended Pasadena Junior College, Broad Oaks and Whittier Colleges where she earned her Bachelor's Degree. Barbara moved to Bakersfield and taught Kindergarten and First Grade at Beardsley Elementary. In the rooming house where she lived, she met Mary Grundt who introduced her to Herman and they married June 18, 1944. They moved to Wasco to the "Ranch" and she became active in the community. Barbara's many interests and talents included; artist, seamstress, amateur naturalist, avid reader and hostess. Barbara and Herman were active in teaching Sunday School, serving as Deacon and Deaconess and leading programs teaching others how to share with and care for others. Barbara loved helping in the Crafts Bazaar held annually at the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church sharing her many craft projects; including knitting, smocking, crochet, embroidery, box making, quilting and pattern design. Many of Barbara's activities centered on her children; she was a Cub Scout Leader, Bluebirds Leader and 4-H Leader. Following opening their home to 2 nieces when her sister-in-law Melva passed away, Barbara was named Mother of the Year by the Wasco Chamber of Commerce in 1957 for her open heartiness and continued participation in her many activities. Barbara will be remember by her family as a listening Mother who gave her children and grandchildren advice to prepare them for life and someone who modeled her faith by example. Barbara is survived by her children, Jim Grundt and wife Janet, George Grundt and wife Dorothy, and Judy and husband Steve Oswalt; grandchildren, Melinda Maderious, Christopher Grundt and his wife, Jenna; great grandchildren, Breanna Maderious, Jalie and Charlie Grundt; and sister-in-law, Mercedes Daley and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; brother, Cowles Albert Daley; and parents. The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at Glenwood Gardens where she was a resident for 8 years and the staff at Odyssey Hospice for their support the last days of her life. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to; First United Methodist Church, 1441 7th St., Wasco, CA 93280; Wasco Historical Society, P.O. Box 186, Wasco, CA 93280; or Wasco Scholarship Association, P.O. Box 7, Wasco, CA 93280. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 3, at 11am at the First Methodist Church of Wasco, 7th and Birch for Barbara Caroline Grundt, age 91, who passed away July 26, 2011. Interment will be private at Wasco Memorial Park.
