Obituary

Augustina "Augie" Salazar Hena March 27, 1951 - August 2, 2013. Augie was born in Brownsville, Texas on March 27, 1951 to Catarino and Otilia Salazar. As the 2nd child of 17, she grew up following crops as a migrant farm worker along with her family who eventually settled in Earlimart California in 1962. Despite an early life filled with hardship and poverty, Augie would go on to achieve great things, becoming the first one in her family to graduate from college. Augie attended Delano High School graduating in 1971. She then completed an A.A. in Liberal Arts at Bakersfield College in 1974, and a B.A. in Sociology from California State University, Bakersfield in 1976. She also received a California Community Colleges Teaching Credential in 1976 and California Certificate of Bilingual Proficiency in Spanish in 1978. Augie's career in counseling, case management and advocacy spanned 38 years and included work as a Counselor and Parenting Educator at Clinica Sierra Vista in Lamont; and counseling positions at The California State Department of Rehabilitation and Catholic Social Services. Since April 1994, Augie worked for the Kern County Mental Health Department as a Recovery Specialist III, providing a range of adult mental health services. She possessed a wealth of knowledge and experience that made her a valuable asset to her team; and is described by her co-workers as "one of the kindest, most compassionate individuals we have ever known or had the pleasure of working with". Augie was loved dearly by her Mental Health Department co-workers, friends, and clients and will truly be missed. In addition to her long counseling career, Augie was also committed to migrant health issues and giving back to the community and served 3 terms on The Board of Directors of the National Center for Farmworker Health, an organization dedicated to improving the health of migrant farmworker families. Augie will be remembered as the most independent, responsible, loving, caring, giving and god-fearing woman you would ever meet. Her beautiful smile, friendliness, and kind heart made an impact on all those that crossed paths with her. Augie was a mother of 3 and grandmother of 8; and shared a very special bond with her eldest grandson, Elijah, Jr.; and her sister Stella who was Augie's "SUNSHINE" and cared for her until the end. Augie meant the world to her family and friends and our lives will be forever changed because of her.
