Obituary

Arnold Funk was born June 10, 1922, to Jacob and Nellie Funk, in Shafter, California, and went home to be with his Lord on December 20, 2010. In his early childhood, the family moved to Coldwater, Texas. During the Dust Bowl years, Arnold's family moved back to Shafter, California. From an early age, Arnold was always a very hard worker. One thing he always wanted to do was to drive a truck. As a young adult, Arnold bought his first truck. In 1952 he bought his second new truck, that was the backbone of Arnold Funk Trucking until he retired in 1990. After Arnold retired, that Autocar was eventually purchased by Art Van Beek of El Monte Dairy, was restored to original condition, and is now driven all over the western U.S. to be featured in antique truck shows. Whenever Art Van Beek needed an original part, he would call Arnold. Sure enough, Arnold had hung onto the parts. This truck was featured in a 2004 issue of Wheels of Time magazine. In 1964, Arnold purchased another truck, and the best 10 years of his business, during the 1980's, were the years his wife, Salome, drove one truck and he drove the other. After retiring in 1990, Arnold and his wife hit the road in their pickup and trailer to renew friendships with dozens of relatives across the U.S. and Canada. They enjoyed many years of traveling and loved sharing stories of their numerous adventures. Arnold became a Christian at an early age, and serving God was always important to him. He was involved in Bible Studies and men's groups, served as an usher in church, and time member of Rosedale Bible Church. Arnold enjoyed serving on the U-Serve Team, which helped remodel and build churches in Mexico and various parts of the western U.S. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Salome; his daughter, Charlotte Kaukani and husband Richard; his son, Bob Funk and wife Karen; 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Arnold loved his family and enjoyed family get-togethers. He cherished the times he was able to spend with his children and grandchildren, and was delightfully entertained by the antics of his great-grandchildren. He always furnished the home-made ice cream, his favorite flavor being chocolate-peanut butter. The family wishes to say a special thank you to Christina, Geraldine, and the special Hoffman Hospice staff, including Jennifer, Roz, Juanita, and Frances. Thank you for helping us take care of dad in his home. He appreciated being able to stay in his home of 50+ years. We are grateful for all your help in caring for him. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-8pm at Peters Funeral Home in Shafter. A memorial service will begin at 11am on Thursday at Rosedale Bible Church.
