IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Angel Molina
Sumaya
May 19, 1934 – March 19, 2008
On March 19, 2008, Angel Molina Sumaya passed away. Angel was born in Calexico, California on May 19, 1934, to Pedro and Isabel Sumaya. He was raised in Calexico, and attended Calexico High, where he enjoyed the sport of wrestling. At this young age, Angel and his family travelled up and down California, following the harvest as migrant farm workers. He had to delay his education due to his father's untimely death. He eventually settled in the Arvin area, where met the love of his life, Hilda Valenzuela. They were married on March 21, 1954. The other loves of his life were his three daughters, Christina, Hilda and Isabel, his son-in-law Patrick Arvizu and his Godson, Frank Valenzuela Jr. His daughters honored him by giving him 5 grandchildren, Angelica Rivero, Lindsey Christina Smith, Robert Angel Rivero, Patrick Arvizu and Alejandro Arvizu. To further brighten his life he had four great grandsons, Angel Rivero, Anthony Rivero, Benjamin Rivero and Jonah Alderete. Through his strong work ethic, he was able to return to adult school and finally get his high school diploma. It was Angel's dream that his daughters be given the gift of higher education, since he didn't have the opportunity to pursue it himself. All of his daughters graduated from college holding various degrees, including bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. His dream for education was not only limited to his daughters; Angel actively worked for improving schools around him, as an elected school board member for the Arvin Union School District. Angel was a role model and a trailblazer by being the first hispanic member on the board. This position he held for over 35 years. Angel's involvement was not limited to the schools, as he held numerous positions in various clubs and committees in and around the Kern Country area. Angel served the country of Kern for over 30 years, retiring as a much appreciated maintenance supervisor. His retirement years were spent with his loving wife, Hilda, as they travelled, enjoyed their grandchildren and great grandchildren, and continued community involvement. Angel credited his wife for his life's many successes through her unwavering support and encouragement. Angel loved to travel to the local casinos, talk politics with friends, play poker with family and to spend time with his wife. For better than 30 years, Angel served the St. Thomas Church and was honored as "Man of Year." He served as president of the Guadalupaños for numerous years. He will be dearly missed by all, but he and his contributions will not soon be forgotten. His legacy will live on through his immediate family and the many lives that he touched. He is proceeded by his mother and father, and sister Angelita Provincio, his beloved in-laws Filomeno and Dolores Valenzuela. He is survived by his wife, his daughters, his son-in-law, his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and his brothers Pedro Sumaya from Chula Vista, CA and Raul Sumaya from Wesley, CA, and his sister Virginia Meza from Turlock, CA. An educational scholarship fund will be set up in honor of Angel's legacy in local education, at the Arvin branch of Bank of America. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held Monday, March 24 at 7pm at St. Thomas Church, Arvin. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday,March 25 at 10am. Fr. Jorge de la Torre will officiate the service and interment will follow at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin. Visitations will be held Sunday, March 23 from 4pm to 8pm and Monday, March 24 from 2p tp 6pm at Arvin Funeral Home.
