Altie Len Cook was born May 2, 1920 to Anderson and Lou (Engle) Baggs in Stuttgart, Arkansas. She moved to Shafter in 1955 and married Edward Cook November 26, 1956 in Las Vegas. As with many of the settlers to this area, she worked in agriculture; in the potatoes for Mable Ashmore, with the raisins for Ernest Adams and in the roses for Armstrong Nursery. She enjoyed working with her hands and sewing, quilting, embroidery and making willow baskets were some of her favorite pastimes. She was an avid Bible reader, completely reading through the Bible 96 times. She was a member of the Sunshine Full Gospel Church in Oildale. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Edward Cook who passed away August 12, 2002; son, George Doles who passed away October 1, 2006 in a vehicle accident; her parents, and siblings, Lizzie, Ader, Birdie, Dollie, Johnnie and Doshie. She leaves behind, 3 daughters, Janie Colbert of Shafter; Carolyn LaRue and husband Frenchy, Shirley Epps and husband Dwayne; sister, Gladys Word, all of Bakersfield; 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wed., Dec 13 at 2pm at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter for Altie, age 86, who passed away Dec. 9, at her daughters' home in Bakersfield with her family at her side. Pastor Clarence McCain of the Sunshine Full Gospel Church will officiate and interment will follow at Shafter Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Tues, Dec. 12 from 2pm – 8pm.
