Obituary

Alice Rohrbach Smithers was born July 16, 1918 in Medina, North Dakota to Jacob and Katherine (Werre) Rohrbach one of 10 children. The family moved to California in the late 1930's during the Great Depression looking for work on the farms and potato sheds. Alice moved to Santa Maria and married Art Otto and they returned to the San Joaquin Valley. Art was killed in a trucking accident on the grapevine in 1957 and Alice returned to Bakersfield. She decided to move to Las Vegas and while working as a waitress she met and married Joe Smithers, a chef at one of the large hotels. In 2001 Alice moved to Porterville to be near her brother. She enjoyed playing bingo in the casinos and strolling in gardens looking at flowers and enjoying the beauty of nature. Alice is survived by her brother, Irwin Rohrbach of Porterville; sisters Susie Hellbusch of Shafter, Juanita Hellbusch of Porterville and Esther Long of Red Bluff; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 her husbands; parents, and infant sister, brothers, Harold and Rueben Rohrbach and sisters, Marion Lehr and Florence Heinbuch. A graveside service will be conducted by Peters Funeral Home on Thursday, April 30 at 10am at Shafter Memorial Park for Alice Smithers, age 90, of Porterville who passed away April 23, 2009 in Porterville. Visitations will be held at Whitehurst-Peters-Lloyds on Tuesday, April 28 from 2pm to 5pm and at Peters Funeral Home, Shafter on Wednesday, April 24 from 5pm to 8pm.
