Alfred J. Smith was born July 1, 1915 in Eastland County, Texas to Pleasant and Lela Smith. Smitty came to California at an early age. During World War II he worked at Cal Ship on Terminal Island. Smitty was owner/operator of Smitty's Garage in Shafter for 45 years. Smitty was the only charter member left of the Shafter Lions Club. He was also a life member of Lions International and NRA. He was a 15 year member of Elks Lodge #266, Bakersfield and a former member of the Roving Elks. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Phyllis who passed away in 1960 and by his wife of 66 years, Margaret who passed away July 28, 2007. A graveside funeral service conducted by Peters Funeral Home, Shafter will be held Tuesday, December 11, at 2pm at Shafter Memorial Park for Alfred J. Smith, age 92, of Shafter who passed away December 8, in Shafter. Visitations will be held, Monday from 5pm to 8pm and Tuesday from 10am to 1pm at Peters Funeral Home.
